The West Virginia School of Traditional Skills is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization that is dedicated to preserving, practicing, and passing on the time-honored knowledge that has sustained Appalachian communities for generations. Rooted in the belief that these skills are as relevant today as they were in the past, the school offers hands-on learning experiences that reconnect people with the land, their heritage, and a more self-reliant way of life.
Working with Laurel Fork Farm, an award winning 400 acre educational farm, WVSTS teaches through workshops, demonstrations, and immersive programs, students of all ages can learn skills such as food preservation, gardening, herbal knowledge, from scratch cooking, homesteading, forest farming and other traditional crafts. Each class is designed to be practical, engaging, and accessible whether someone is just beginning their journey or looking to deepen existing knowledge.
More than just a place to learn, the school serves as a gathering space where community, culture, and connection thrive. Participants leave not only with new skills, but with a deeper appreciation for Appalachian traditions and the confidence to incorporate them into everyday life.
At its heart, the West Virginia School of Traditional Skills is about honoring the past while equipping people for a healthier, more sustainable future.
